Shortnin' Breadstuff originated among the enslaved working on plantations in the early 1800s. The gist of the song is that the doctor orders short'nin staff of life to help heal the sick children and it does work.

Shortnin' Bread was a care for that plantation cooks could whip up easily. It just required butter, dark-brown sugar and flour. The word shortnin' breadis actually shortbread. It had been popular in England for hundreds of years. The difference with the plantation type and the English blazon is the dark-brown saccharide which gave the South'due south short'nin bread shortnin' breadstuff a distinctive flavor. Shortnin' Breadstuff Recipe (recreated)

two cups butter
1 cup brown sugar
four cups flour
one/two teaspoon salt

• Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
• Line a 17x 11.5 jellyroll pan with parchment, or spray with non-stick spray.
• In a large basin of a mixer, foam the butter; crush in the sugar until very light and fluffy.
• Turn mixer down to low speed and add the flour and common salt., mixing until smooth.
• Alternately, the dough may be done by manus. Brand sure the butter is very soft and mix information technology well with the brown saccharide; work the flour and common salt in past hand until smoothen. ( Of grade, this be way plantation melt would have washed it.)
• Printing the dough evenly onto the prepared pan.
• Using a precipitous knife and a ruler, score the dough into squares, viii on the long side of the pan past six on the shorter side.
• Bake for 25-xxx minutes or until lightly chocolate-brown.
• Immediately employ the sharp knife to cut through the score marks into squares.
